Hope is a word that gets thrown around a lot, especially at Easter.  It’s an encouraging and powerful thing, hope. But, let’s be real. Sometimes it is hard to muster even the smallest bit of hope.

Every year at Easter I am reminded of the same, simple, powerful truth:
The resurrection of Jesus was all God’s doing.
People had lost all hope and Jesus was raised from the dead anyway.

Mary Magdalene went to the tomb expecting only death and sorrow.  She was so surprised to see the risen Jesus that she didn’t recognize him, her close friend. If even she didn’t have hope, I think it’s understandable that often, neither will we.

Don’t get me wrong.  I think it’s really important for people to do all we can to maintain our own hope and share hopeful acts of love with others.  On Easter, however, I think it’s important to remember that God can act powerfully and with surprising love, even for people who have lost all hope.
