I have never been one much for poetry. I’m not that person who can just quote you a Shakespeare sonnet or the words of Emily Dickinson. When I’m in a conversation, the words of a favorite poem aren’t what come to mind. I don’t have a book of poetry laying on my bedside table.

But every once in awhile, I come across a poem in some publication, hear it on tv, or read it on someone’s Facebook post. And it stops me. Its words hold me in that moment and I can’t help but sit with them and ponder what has been stirred within me.

I had that very experience just yesterday with the poem “Our Deepest Fear” by Marianne Williamson. I immediately found myself sharing it forward with our staff and council leaders. And now I want to share it with you, dear People of Peace. I hope it can inspire you as you continue to write together the next chapters of God’s story in this place.

Our Deepest Fear
by Marianne Williamson

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?

Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.

We were born to make manifest the glory within us.
It is not just in some; it is in everyone.

And, as we let our own light shine, we consciously give
other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

So, don’t be small, People of Peace. Go forth. Shine on. Shine bright. Let your light shine and be not afraid. Liberate the world with the light of God’s love and yours.
