PEACE FOR THE FUTURE: Rooted in Community, Ready to Serve

Our guiding principles are:

  1. Worship of the triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is at the center of our life together.
  2. We live rooted in Scripture and prayer, and we encourage each other to question, listen, and learn.
  3. We believe everyone is loved and worthy of love; all people are welcome in God’s kingdom.
  4. We respond to the needs of our neighbors near and far.
  5. We actively consider how our time, talents, and finances are used for the glory of God.
  6. We promote love and justice for all of God’s creation.

PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH

1. Inspired Worship – Worship is at the center of our life together.

  • Worship of the triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is at the center of our life together.
  • We live rooted in Scripture and prayer, and we encourage each other to question, listen, and learn.

Goals:

In five years we have two worship services on Sunday morning (one traditional, one informal) and an additional evening worship service (family/creative/contemplative).  180 people worship at Peace in a week.  Sermons and music are easily recorded and distributed on social media.  We have the option to use video in the sanctuary.

The Need:

  • Modernize our sanctuary sound system and extend it throughout the church
  • Record our worship services for distribution to the home-bound, on social media and to our friends and family, wherever they may be.
  • Add projection capabilities in the sanctuary for use during services and special events.
  • A Baby grand piano for our music ministry.

2. Inviting and Accessible Welcome – All People are welcome in God’s kingdom

  • Everyone is loved and worthy of love; all people are welcome in God’s kingdom.

Goals:  In five years, Peace is a hub for the community.  The main building is easily accessible and navigable.  Rooms are dry, comfortable, and properly furnished.  Entrances are clear and signage directs people easily throughout a building that flows logically.  Internal signs are in English and Spanish.  Offices are in the main building to make them an integrated part of the goings-on at Peace.

Sunday mornings we have space for “coffee and socializing” plus enough rooms to comfortably accommodate five classes (adult, youth, confirmation, upper elementary, lower elementary) and a nursery for pre-schoolers. There is a large gathering space (fellowship Hall) with flexibility for a variety of uses. We have a dedicated youth room.  Parking is adequate and the building is accessible to people in wheelchairs.  Kitchen appliances are upgraded to make it easy for anyone to use them.

The Need:

  • Add and improve signage inside and outside the church
  • Facilities are beautiful, comfortable and accessible (roof, HVAC system)\
  • Move offices into the main building (4 offices: Sr. Pastor, Min Associate, Admin, Finance)
  • Revamping sanctuary/narthex/hallway space
  • Improve church entrance and flow through the building.
  • Create five rooms for use by Peace on Sunday morning and use for church and community use throughout the week.
  • One room is dedicated for Youth and can be used both for Peace Youth activities as well as Youth events that serve the wider community.
  • Repaving parking lot (Eco-friendly design).
  • Make entrances and curbs handicapped accessible.

Repointing brickwork around sanctuary and fix leaks.

3. Community Ministry – Responding to the needs of our neighbors near and far

  • We respond to the needs of our neighbors near and far.
  • We actively consider how our time, talents, and finances are used for the glory of God.

Goals:

In five years, at least three hundred people who aren’t part of Peace participate in life-changing ministries annually through our community ministry center, a flexible use space with classrooms and larger gathering space, bathrooms and at least one shower.  This is in addition to the ways we already serve the wider world.  A part-time staff person works to make connections between our church and the needs of our community.

The Need:

  • Renovating Lauxman so that it can be used for community ministry purposes or developing a different area of our facilities for community ministry.
  • Hiring a part-time staff person (10 hours a week) as a community liaison. Possibly as a community organizer.
  • Making renovated classroom space available to Church and community ministry.
  • A jungle gym for the youth at Peace and in the community

Possible ministries that can be housed at The Community Ministry Center includeAA/NA/Alanon groups, Hypothermia shelter, After School program for Parklawn Elementary students, Summer mission trip student housing, Healing Arts Center for Immigrants, Bethany House Financial literacy classes, ESL classes, citizenship classes, Office space for one non-profit working in line with our mission.

4. Creation Care – Love for all God’s creation

  • We promote love and justice for all of God’s creation.

Goals:

Our community includes the environment.  In five years Peace is known as a beacon of creation care.  We focus on environmentally friendly projects such as solar panels, community gardens, beekeeping, flowers, trees, and a labyrinth. We are an urban refuge for an increasingly stressed community.

  The Need:

  • Solar Panels
  • Labyrinth connecting prayer and nature.
  • Walking paths for the community
  • More trees
  • Parking lot design is eco-friendly
  • Increased space for Community Gardens
