On Thursday June 19 we commemorate Juneteenth, a national holiday.
It is sad yet useful to recall that the church, from most of its history, accepted the ownership of human beings along with pack animals and property as ordained and right under the eyes of God. We ask ‘how could this be?’ but the application of hearing the Gospel’ to the large systems we dwell in is apparently very difficult! Christianity became largely individualistic. MY personal sin, MY salvation MY forgiveness ME going to heaven. Yet Jesus’ concern was also about the collective, the well being of the polis- all the people. How do you react to this statement by Otis Moss III ? “The church must become a holy disruption in society, not a chaplain to the status quo”.
Being a holy disruptor was what got Jesus killed. What does it mean today to take up the cross as Jesus commanded? What does it mean when Jesus says ;” If the Son of God sets you free you are free indeed?” I think these statements call for contemplation…
