Words for the Week – February 27, 2020

Have you ever been lost?  Last week, I preached about being in unfamiliar territory. On a high mountain with Jesus, they saw a new vision and experienced a new aspect of Jesus. They quickly cooked up a plan based on their past experiences. But they were in a brand new situation. The old solution did not apply. They were terrified and they fell to the ground.

While they were grounded with terror, Jesus bent down to touch them. He bid them follow him and they did.  He led them forward when they didn’t know what to do next, and he comes to us and leads us too.

Listen to the sermon here.

This week, we begin Lent by hearing about Jesus in the wilderness, being tempted by the devil.  The temptations are, at their root, all about power. At a time when Jesus appears powerless, the devil tries to get him to act out in ways that would not be true to his character or his calling.
When have you been tempted by power?  When have you seen people misuse power?

We pray “Lead us not into temptation” and in that prayer, we acknowledge that we can’t on our own resist the temptation to misuse our power or fear powerlessness. We need God to help us.

Be at Peace,
Pastor Sarah
