“…to rebuke ruler is not seditious, provided it is done in teh way here described: namely, they the office to which God has committted that duty, and through God’s Word, spoken publicly, boldly, and honestly. To rebuke rulers in this way is, on the contrary a praiseworthy, noble, and rare virtue, and particularly great service to God, as the psalm here proves. It would be far more seditious if a preachering did not rebuke the sins of the rulers; for then he makes people angry and sullen, strengthens the wickedness of tyrants, becomes a partakers in it, and bears responsibility for it.”
~ Martin Luther on Psalm 82
During my two decades as an ordained pastor I have wrestled with bringing the Gospel into the political. NOT because I believe to do so is wrong! In fact, as Brother Luther taught it is entirely necessary.
Polis simply means “ the life of all of us together. See the words police, metropolis, poll, political. Indeed Luther also wrote that the Gospel that is not for here and now is no Gospel, what preachers clearly should not do is support one party in the nation over another. Such is wrong. Yet we find many doing just that. I pray over such sermons some of which I have done here at Peace.
Luther had no respect for pastors who wouldn’t stand up to the local Prince’s misdeeds or cruelty. What I want to remind you is that the death of Jesus came from politicians both Jewish and Roman. They hated his words and actions. I’d also like to remind you that I will always be available to listen if you disagree with or have questions about any sermon I give. Or if you are concerned that I have not said enough.
This is a tough time for our country and for Peace . We pray together for the Holy Spirit.
